Methods: Resins of blue, yellow and green colors were studied. A total of 120 specimens were made and then divided into groups of 15 elements each, all having the same dimensions. Next, they were kept in aqueous medium until being subjected to mechanical testing. The flexural strength was tested in a universal test machine (EMIC DL 10000) in which the specimens were subjected to a gradual load until fracture occurred. Results: Pigmented resins had flexural strength values compatible with clinical use, being similar to those from colorless ones, except for OrtoClas green-colored and yellow-colored resins, which showed greater flexural strength. The OrtoClas green-colored resin was the most resistant to fracture (482.2 N), whereas the OrtoCril colorless resin was the least resistant (368.4 N). All OrtoClas resins showed higher strength values compared to OrtoCril resins of same color, except for the OrtoCril’s blue-colored resin, which presented higher flexural strength than that of the other trademark. Conclusions: The use of pigments seems to have no effect on decreasing the flexural strength of self-curing acrylic resins. Therefore, pigmented resins are compatible with clinical use.

Assessment of the flexural strength of two heat-curing acrylic resins for artificial eyes.

Prosthetic eyes are artificial substitutes for the eyeball, made of heat-curing acrylic resin, serving to improve the esthetic appearance of the mutilated patient and his/her inclusion in society. The aim of this study was to assess the flexural strength of two heat-curing acrylic resins used for manufacturing prosthetic eyes. Thirty-six specimens measuring 64 x 10 x 3.3 mm were obtained and di...

Flexural Strength of Polymethyl Methacrylate Repaired with Fiberglass

Objectives The purpose of this experimental study was to discover a method to increase the strength of repaired polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) samples. Materials and Methods In this experimental study, 40 specimens with the dimensions of 65×10×2.5mm3 were fabricated using heat-curing acrylic resin. Sixteen specimens were repaired with fiberglass and self-curing PMMA, while 16 samples were rep...

Mechanical properties of hot curing acrylic resin after reinforced with different kinds of fibers

Background. Acrylic resins used in restorative dentistry are the most popular denture base material, because they have good optical properties and small solubility in body fluids. However their mechanical properties are limited and therefore acrylic resins require different methods of reinforcement one of which can be application of different kinds of fibers. Objectives. To investigate the effe...
